Secret Pal 12 Questionaire

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like? I'm in love with Jitterbug but there are so many other great yarns out there and so many that I haven't tried and that I would love to try. I'm game for anything but the froo-froo fluffy acrylic stuff.

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in? I have a cute corky vase that I keep my bamboo straights in and I recently purchased fabric fold-over thingies for my dpns and my Option Interchangables.

3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced? I've been knitting for about 4 or 5 years. I would say that I'm an intermediate knitter. I haven't really gotten into doing anything too challenging and advanced like. At least I don't think so. I'm not really into designing or anything and I haven't done very many garment items but I'm pretty confident that I can follow most patterns.

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list? My Amazon wish list

5. What's your favorite scent? At the moment it's honey or coconut. They feel like home to me and remind me of summertimes with my family as I was growing up.

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy? I do have a sweet tooth... try 32 of them! I love my sweets a little too much, especially of the baked goods variety.

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin? I make a meager attempt to garden with herbs and greenery in the yard. I also like to read in bed and on the side porch on summer mornings. I don't spin but I'm hoping to try my hand at dyeing this summer.

8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD) I listen to a lot of county but have a mix of stations programed into my car stereo. My new phone (Sony Ericksonn Walkman) has the ability to play MP3s but I haven't figured it out yet.

9. What's your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can't stand? I love fall earthy colors - pumpkins, rusts, bronzes. In the summertime I'm also attracted to clear blues that remind me of the ocean and soft breezes.

10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets? I've been recently singled. My friend Sarah is moving in. We're not allowed to have pets here.

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos? I wear scarves, not just for warmth but also as an accessory to my outfit. Hats don't usually do well with me - I have an oddly shaped head. Not so much of a mitten gal but fingerless mittens or gloves are pretty cool. Only have one poncho type item and I love it. This past winter I got into the stole idea, love that too.

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit? Not really sure. But looking at my projects posted on Ravelry it would appear that I enjoy socks and bags.

13. What are you knitting right now? A pair of socks, a pair of felted slippers (because it would appear that everyone in my family now wants a pair), and hopefully finishing Wisp before my cousin's wedding.

14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts? Yes! Especially those that have been well made and have my interests in mind.

15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic? I usually use my Option Interchangables for most projects and metal dpns for socks. But I also have a collection of bamboo straights too.

16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift? Yes, I have both.

17. How old is your oldest UFO? Only about a year and a half old. I started a Lizzard Ridge blanket and got all the squares finished but never seamed it together. Maybe this summer.

18. What is your favorite holiday? How about a favorite season? I'm totally a fall baby. I'm in love with fall earthy colors. Every day of all feels like it's a special holiday especially for me. But favorite holiday to spend with family? No brainer, Christmas. Traditions, family, cold weather outside hot chocolate and goodies inside, sweaters and wool socks. Favorite time to have friends over? Summer BBQ. Nothing says summer fun like meat cooked over flames outside.

19. Is there anything that you collect? Books and tea

20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have? Check out my wish list on Amazon. There are tons of great knit books there that I'm interested in. Most of the books that I already have are posted in my library on Ravelry but there are a few that aren't there to load up yet.

21. Are there any new techniques you'd like to learn? This summer I would like to work on some lace projects.

22. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements? I love having a sock on the needles... or sometimes two. I wear a size 9 shoe. Foot measurements include (and please let me know if I’m missing any pertinent information here): Ankle circumference – 9 inches, foot circumference – 9 inches, Foot length – 10 inches. I don’t know if this matters or not, but I have very high arches.

23. When is your birthday? October 17th

24. Are you on Ravelry? If so, what's your ID? Yes! knitknucklehead

Keepin' Cool in Summer Dishcloth Swap

I'm jumping on the bandwagon for this fun summer swap. Wanna join us?

1. Do you Knit or Crochet? For how long? I've been knitting for about 4 or 5 years now.

2. Do you enjoy using metal, wooden, or some other kind of needle\hook? I love my Options needles for most projects. And I use the metal dpns that I find in my local cheap-o craft store for socks. I also have a small collection of Clover wood needles. I've seen some really beautiful needles out there but I haven't tried them yet.

3. What are your favorite types of yarn? Any you just can't stand? I'm really into sock yarns right now and am hoping to experiment with some lace this summer. There are so many great yarns out there that I don't know if I can choose just one or even a few right now.

4. When it comes to cotton, are there any brands you'd love to try and haven't? Don't know. I've only used Sugar N Cream for cloths. But I do have some Lambs Pride cotton in my stash that I'd like to play with this summer. I don't really know a whole lot about the cottons out there. But I'm eager to try something new.

5. When you make Dishcloths, do you use them yourself, or tend to give them as gifts? I haven't done many dishcloths. The cloths that I've done have been baby washcloths or trivit-like cloths for gifts.

6. Do you have a favorite color? Any that you dislike? I like very earthy colors. The majority of my house is earthy looking with browns, beighes, blues, and reds. Although my eyes in a yarn store are drawn to the bright colors (I mean, who's isn't?) but the bright stuff just isn't really me in the house. Although I love the bright pinks and purples in my garden.

7. What color(s) (if any!) are your kitchen and bath decorated in? My kitchen walls are yellow and my dishes are very earthy green, yellow, and red pottery. My bathroom is dark blue and retro blue (the toliet was put in in the 40'2 and is retro blue).

8. What are your favorite scents around the house? Clean fresh smells for summer.

9. What is your very favorite thing about summer? No school!!! I have the freedom to do the things I really want to do suring the summer months. Sometimes I take a class or get a part time job that is completely different from my actual job. It would be nice to take some art like class this summer.

10. What is your least favorite thing about summer? Those days that it gets blistering hot and you can't even stand to be in your own skin and your electric bill goes sky high from the AC going full blast 24/7.

11. Do you use soap or body wash in the shower? I generally use body wah in the shower. At the sink I go back and forth between liquids and natural hand made bars.

12. What scents do you enjoy in the bath? Just about anything but particularly honey, coconut, and lavender.

13. What is your favorite dishcloth pattern? I don't know that I really have one. But I do know that I don't perfer ones that are really lacy or holey. Tecture is good but I get my fingers stuck in holes. Besides I think I would rather have a bathcloth if my swap pal is ok with that. I really enjoy exfoliating in the shower. I find it really relaxing. Washing dishes are not so relaxing if you know what I mean.

14. What sort of treats do you enjoy? Sweet or Salty? I enjoy all sorts of treats. I'm trying to be good this summer and loose some weight from all those treats. I plan on following the Weight Watchers plan and doing lots of walking this summer. But those yummy treats will find their way into my life every now and then.

15. Imagine today is one of the hottest days of the year - what do you do to keep cool? Or are you one of those folks who loves the hot weather? I love the warmer weather. A perfect summer afternoon includes sitting out on the porch with a great glass of iced tea or lemonaid, reading a book or knitting small projects like socks, and admiring the plants around me. Occasionally going over to rub the rosemary or lavender for a little aroma therapy. But if the weather gets too hot, I'm all about hitting the local indoor ice rink for an hour or two of ice skating. What a treat in the summer heat!

16. What sorts of hobbies do you enjoy besides knitting or crocheting? reading, gardening with herbs and greenery, shopping, drinking tea

17. Do you collect anything (besides yarn!) Books. All kinds. I love Jodi Picoult and kids poetry books. I have an Amason wish list with my current book wants. My Amazon wish list

18. Are you on Ravelry? If so, share your ID! knitknucklehead

19. Do you have any allergies? Mushrooms and all foods that live underwater.

20. Do you have any pets? Not allowed to have pets here.

SITMT: Things that I'm thankful for

(updated to include photos 11/24) Being that today is Thanksgiving the Sock It To Me Twice swap is asking for us to post 10 things we are thankful for. Since I'm posting from my parent's computer at the moment, I don't have access to my photos saved on my computer. I'll be editing when I get back home on Saturday to include pictures. So check back again later for a more visually appealing post.

1. Having had Buddy in my life. (No brainer, huh? If you are new to this post, read down a few entries and you'll see what I mean.)

2. Growing up in such a warm and loving family. They'll push you to do what you never thought you could accomplish and they're always there to support you and cheer you on. 3. The Little Man. He's brought so much joy to the family and it's so wonderful to have little ones around again now that my generation is all grown up and stuff. 4. My sensay Jaz. La-ove her! She's been such a guidance for me in the knitting world and she's always challenging me to knit things I think are too hard for me. (photo stolen from her blog) 5. Tea - Nature's gift of relaxation. 6. Fall - my favorite season. I love everything about fall. The leaves turning, pumpkins everywhere, visiting the farm, the cooler air just perfect for long sleeves and a comfy pair of jeans, baked goods, the colors, the smells, everything! 7. My TomTom Honey got me for Christmas last year. It keeps me from getting lost when traveling through the city and is great for spacing out on the directions on those long road trips. 8. SudaCare Vapor-Plug. My sinuses couldn't make it through the night without it! 9. All the great friends I'm making through blogging and knitting. You all have such great ideas and are supportive in knitting and other life happenings. I never thought I would meet so many people through starting a blog. Some of you I hope to meet in person some day.

(Sorry, no photo here because I have yet to meet any of you.)

10. Holidays with all of my family. It's a rare occasion when we all get to get together but it brings back such happy memories of growing up in a 'village of a family'.

October 17th. (I’m a bicentennial baby.)

Answers for Chan

Chan had a few questions for me and I decided to post them here. Some of the questions might provide insite to others with whom I may be swapping with now and in the future.

1. Is there anything you love, but would never knit for yourself? I’m kind of getting into wearing wraps at work. You never know about the temperatures in these school buildings or even room to room. The wrap is so versatile and helps me to regulate my own temperature throughout my day but I have yet to knit one.

2. What colors do you dislike? Strangely enough my eyes are drawn to very bright brilliant colors but I really don’t like wearing them. Yellows and Pinks are usually not my favorite unless the yellow is very golden or it’s a paler pink paired with brown. Also, although I do like Cream (it’s part of that fall Brown family that I love so much) it doesn’t look so good on me unless I’ve gotten a really great tan over the summer.

3. What are your foot measurements/shoe size? I wear a size 9 shoe. Foot measurements include (and please let me know if I’m missing any pertinent information here): Ankle circumference – 9 inches, foot circumference – 9 inches, Foot length – 10 inches. I don’t know if this matters or not, but I have very high arches. See.4. Are you sensitive to any fibers? Do you prefer a particular fiber? I really don’t like the feel of the synthetics (acrylic and nylon) on my skin and I tend to sweat more in them. I’m finding that I like knitting with cotton and/or bamboo blends. But I still feel a little on the yarn type virgin side being that there are so many yarn types out there that I haven’t tried yet so I have no reference.

5. Does anyone other than Amy have a significant event coming up for which something special might be appropriate? I’ll be 31 in mid-October but other than that, nothing really special coming up that I know of.

6. Who is your favorite fictional character? (For instance, after wanting to be Trixie Belden most of my life, I now want to be Lisa Cuddy, even though I swear her character is modeled after a friend of mine.) Grissim from CSI maybe. I love the way he thinks and poses questions to others.

7. Is there anything you would *NOT* want me to knit for you? (Don't worry about sweaters, unless it's for a pet or a stuff animal. They're still too scary for me.) I have a drawer full of dish rags that my childhood neighbor restocks on a regular basis.

8. Of all the things you've knitted, what is your favorite? Maybe the Monkey socks I made for my Color Red Swap partner. I was very pleased at the way they came out and it was hard to give them up. But I’ve got plans for my own Monkey socks in the same yarn but a different color way. Yeah me!

And as a last thought, Chan, I would LOVE to meet you in person at some point! My schedule is open and yet constantly changing at the moment so you’ll have to call a general time frame and we’ll go from there.
Can ya tell I'm diggin' that fall is here, at least in theory?

Knit 1 Tea 2 Color Swap Questionnaire

1. Do you like loose tea or bags, or both – something you want to try?
I tend to like bag tea for on the go. I take tea with me to work a lot and it’s just easier that way. But we also have a cast iron kettle that Dave and I will use in the evenings with loose tea.

2. What is your favorite kind of tea (Brand, flavor, variety, etc)?
We just came back from a trip to South Africa so for the moment I’m really into the Rooibos teas. During the hotter months I tend to make a lot of the fruitier teas into iced tea – favorite: orange spice. When visiting my local coffee shop I tend to get a good chai. But I’m open to various kinds of teas and am always looking for a new one to try, although I’m not a fan of the minty teas. I'm dying to try Teavana's rooibos teas like Rooibos Lemon Twist, Rooibos Chai, and Rooibos Caramel Creme and blends like MatéVana (caffeinated) & Rooibos Chai or Raspberry Sangria & Rooibos Lemon .

3. Favorite color in regards to tea or one you would like to try? (black, green, red, and white) (keeping in mind that this is how this swap is set up).
I tend to stick with black and red teas. For me, they have a stronger, more robust taste to them.

4. Would you say you were a tea pot kind of person or just a hot water heater kind?
For most days I’m a hot water heater and take it on the go. In the morning before work I’ll cheat and use the microwave. If I’m home in the afternoon I’ll use the kettle on the stove. When Dave makes me tea in the evening he brews it in the cast iron kettle.

5. What tea accessories would you like but have never purchases for yourself?
I don’t know.

6. How do you prefer to be pampered? (examples: mani/pedi, bubble bath, yummy treat, etc).
I love to treat myself to a manicure/pedicure every now and then. I find it so relaxing and rejuvenating. I also enjoy yummy treats, but I’m following WeightWatchers and so I’ve had to cut back and really consider what I’m treating myself with. But the best pampering is a toss up between a good shopping trip and a back massage.

7. If you were a kind of yarn what would you be and why?
Ohhh.. good question… I’ll have to think a little more about this one. Stop by in a week or so and I promise I’ll have some sort of answer for ya.

8. If you had to knit/crochet baby booties, a fun fur scarf, or a fair isle sweater, which would you choose and why?
Well, I’ve gone through my stage of fun scarves and occasionally will whip one up for a friend and I’ve done my share of baby booties this year. (Was all of Alexandria pregnant this year?! There must be something in the water!) So I might make an attempt in something fair isle for something new. I don’t know about a sweater though… it would have to depend on the pattern. I’m not a big fan of seaming and the tops I’ve knit so far required a lot of seaming which discourages me from ever finishing them.

9. What other event would make you skip a tea party? (A garden party? A book club meeting? A yoga class? Opening night for a new action thriller? etc?)
Possibly a book club meeting if it was a good group of discussers and they had good taste in book selections. My WeightWatchers meetings – can’t miss those! Dinner out with a group of friends. A walking group – if I could ever find one.

10. What treat would you consider essential at your tea party? (Sweet? Salty? Scones? Those petite pastry trays with a couple of all sorts of things? Little crust less sandwiches?)
When hosting a group of people and there is food/snacks involved I always try to provide the three basics: a salty, a sweet, and a healthy. Personally with my tea I prefer the baked goods section: biscotti, scones, muffins, etc.

11. When buying yarn for a project how do you choose - do you buy the one called for or do you substitute?
I’m not very good at substituting yarn on my own. I’ll usually try to go with what the pattern calls for and then I’ll go to a good knitting buddy who is much more in the know about yarns than I am and have her (or the nice people at the yarn store) offer up suggestions on what can be used to substitute without having to make too many adjustments to the pattern.

12. What do you carry your knitting/crocheting in when on the go?
Up until recently I’ve used a tote bag that one of my students made for me a few years back. But I’ve just finished knitting (and felting) the French market bag from Knitty and I’ve been taking that for a spin when knitting on the go.

13. Favorite movie to watch while knitting/crocheting?
Anything that Dave puts on and seems to be enjoying. He’s more of the movie buff than I am. However, I don’t go for the scary/horror flicks. They still give me nightmares!

14. Are you a traditional tea cup kind of person or a mug type of person? Do you care if they match?
I don’t own any official tea cups. We use mugs in our house. And I don’t think we have any that actually match. They are sort of a random collection, most of freebee giveaways and ones that were gifts from my students. Please, no more teacher mugs!

15. Favorite childhood birthday party?
There’s not one in particular that sticks out in my mind, but I always liked the sleep-overs. Even now, I’ll visit an old college roomie and we’ll sleep out on the living room floor and chat into the wee hours of the night, raiding the fridge as we see fit, talking about boys (men), clothes, and hair. Oh, to feel young again!

16. Favorite type of scone and jam?
Scones – something berry-ish, adding that extra little bit of sweetness to it. Jam – love orange marmalade and recently had cherry while in South Africa… loved it! Other wise… they’re all good!!!

17. If you use candles, what is your favorite scent?
Dave likes it best when I light candles that smell like baked goods. But I also enjoy the fruitier ones as well. Vanilla is always a popular one to go with.

18. If you could choose 3 people to have 'tea' with, who would they be and why? (famous or not, living or dead).
Actually I’m going to get a little sentimental here, but I would have tea with my mom (living) and grandmother (deceased). Having tea with my mom in the morning has become a special time for me and I don’t get a chance to do it that often being that we are 4 hours apart. My enjoyment of tea comes from her love of tea and the serenity and enjoyment of the little things she has taught me.

19. You've been invited to a tea party, what 'props' will you wear (formal or casual)?
I tend to be a very casual person. I’d probably just come as is. But I’m all for themed gatherings, and would fully participate if we were asked to “prop it up” with sun hats or whatever. I dig theme based gatherings.

20. Any allergies/preferences you have or are willing to admit to?
I have an intolerance to eating mushrooms and seafood.

Anything we missed that you want your pal to know?
Check out my blog and please leave me comments periodically to let me know you’re out there. Also, I’ve never had anyone knit anything especially for me (so sad).

Color Swap Survey

In order to help your partner learn more about you, please post this survey and your answers to your blog: (I know I'm a little late on this, but in my defense I just found it. Besides, it might help future swap partners.)

1. Are you a yarn snob (do you prefer high-end/natural fibers)? Do you avoid Red Heart and Lion Brand? Or is it all the same to you?
I do try to avoid yarns like Red Heart and other acrylic yarns but I have found that I do like Lion Brand's new cotton line for kid's projects. Other than than, I'm still exploring and experimenting with yarns for the most part. I have found that I enjoy working with natural fibers such as cotton and bamboo but I'm not beyond working with a little novelty yarn to add a little fun to a project.

2. Do you spin? Crochet?
I tried crocheting in college and it didn't go well. I haven't tried again since. I wish I would try spinning just once. But at the current moment, I don't have the time or space for it. For now, it's just knitting

3. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do?
I like to read and I've made honest attempts at gardening. The herbs are the only plants I seem to do well with. There are of course other random around the house do-it-yourself things that I attempt here and there. I think crafty things in general can be fun. I've recently attempted to scrapbook, but I'm not sure that I'll get addicted to all that cutting and work.

4. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with?
I don't know if I have a favorite yarn, but right now I'm really enjoying tofutsies, Rowan 4-ply, and Yummy. I like yarns that are soft to the touch and feel just a little silky maybe in the hand. A good cozy feel is what I enjoy most.

5. What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?
The acrylics tend to fray and get all yucky. I also don't like yarns like Crayon from Knit Picks where the strand is kind of bubbly and lumpy. I don't knit well with those yarns.

6. What is/are your current knitting obsession/s?
I'm at that age where a lot of my friends are having babies so I find myself working on a lot of baby items right now. But I'm also ready to make some stuff for myself too. My first two pairs of socks were dreadfully painful to get through, but a few more later and I think I've got a better handle on it and I'm ready to explore more. I'd also like to make a few things for around the house. Maybe try out a few felted items as well, possibly a bag or two.

7. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?
I don't know if I really have a favorite right now. I'm just really into trying new items.

8. What are you knitting right now?
Check out the list of links for current knitting projects on the side bar of my blog. Projects found on-line are linked there. Other projects might be mentioned in blogs themselves. Look for pictures.

9. Are you a sock knitter?
Refer to answer #6. But I'm really getting into it. With the right yarn (I'm still better with sport weight yarns and socks than with fingering weight) and a cool pattern, I'm all for it now.

10. What's your favorite color? Or--do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer? Are there any colors you hate?
I'm totally a fall baby. I love pumpkin, however, looking around me I don't own a whole lot of it. I wear a lot of browns and naturals. Even the blues that I wear have a very earthy look to them. Every room in my house incorporates some sort of brown, from chocolate to creams. The living room works it in with a retro blue among the shades of brown, the bed room gives wine a relaxing look when paired with straw, chocolate, and cream. Even the dinning room takes the dark tones and brightens them up with some vibrant earthy yellow, blues, reds, and greens.

11. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
Not at the moment, but maybe I'll look into making one.

12. Do you have any allergies? (smoke, pets, fibers, perfume, etc.)
Eating mushrooms and anything that lives underwater. No sea food platter for me.

13. Do you have any religious prohibitions or restrictions?
I grew up Catholic but have moved away from the church. So no.

14. What's your favorite scent? (for candles, bath products etc.)
I love the scent of lavender when I'm using them in the bath or bed room. It's so relaxing and calming. I'm also a freak for rosemary (I know. Weird right?) but it's hard to come across rosemary scented items. I generally rely on the rosemary in my garden.

15. Do you burn candles?
We enjoy those baked goods types of candles. Yum!

16. Do you have a sweet or salt tooth?
Generally I have a sweet tooth. But I've been trying to watch my weight and get into better shape, so those sweets have become sugar free. Dave is a salt person and I can be easily persuaded by pretzels.

17. Do you drink coffee, tea or cocoa?
I love a good cup of tea at just about anytime during the day. It's can be such a great pick me up or settle me down depending on the tea.

18. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?
I am single at the moment, but have been living with my boyfriend for quite some time now. We have no pets.

19. What are some of your favorite things?
I love books, yarn, plants in my yard, clothes, shopping in general, eating lunch at a tasty outdoor bistro, and spending time with my family.

20. Is there anything that you collect?
yarn and books mostly, children's books and adult books (see my list of favorites on the side bar of my blog)

21. What is your favorite holiday?
I don't know if I have a favorite holiday. But the only holiday that I decorate the house for is Christmas. But my favorite season is fall. I love to visit the farms and go pumpkin picking.

22. What is your birthday? (You don't have to tell the year)
October 17th
