Look Mom!

Look what I can do!

Years ago, long before the thought of knitting even entered my mind, my mom stumbled upon some crocheting supplies and sent them off to me at college thinking that I could teach myself a little crafty skill. We were always quite the crafty duo growing up and I think mom was missing her side kick. But try as I might, I just couldn't get the hang of it.

Fast forward ten years or so later and knitting comes into my life. Somehow it came much easier and I've loved every minute, every stitch that it's given me. But it's always kind of bugged me that I wasn't able to get the hang of crocheting.

Not long ago I invested in some Susan Bates bright colored plastic hooks in a little pouchy type thing on sale. I figured, why not give it a go again. How bad could it really be? Surely if I can master 5 dpns for a pair of socks I can master 1 hook, right?

Several attempts later, I was devastated that giving this a go on my own was not going to work. Luckily I found a lovely co-worker who was willing to give me a little lesson in proper hooking techniques. While I'm still getting the hang of holding tension in my left hand (I'm a right handed thrower when knitting) I'm proud of my first accomplishments. These beauties will be sent off to mom with all my love from a crafting daughter miles away.

Yeah!! You are getting the hang of crocheting too! I still don't have the tension thing down either, and I don't think it matters which hand you knit with as I am a scooper. I think it is just like learning anything new it takes a few goes!

Have fun with it!

BTW I am getting ready to take my SB plastic hook pack back b/c I don't like them! LOL Metal for me when hookin'! :o)
Which is so crazy b/c I hate metal for knitting ;op Go figure! Haha!

Look at you go! I like to crochet once in a while too, and Stacey's right - metal hooks. In fact, only metal Boye hooks...

Yeah! I know your mom will love these.

I think taking up crochet is worthwhile just for all the funny things you can say about "hookin'". Great work sticking with it! Crochet makes the best washcloths.

Great JOB! I learned to crochet before I learned to read. Once you get back on the saddle it will all be easypeasy. Have fun with the crocheting. It's a lot more forgiving than knitting.

Happy Knitting and Crocheting!

That's awesome!! Great job!! I learned to crochet first, so I knit with my free yarn in my left hand. :)

And another yes to the metal Boye hooks!

You are doing great and I love the colors of the cloths. I am working on a crocheted afghan, but it's on hold right now and I really need to get back to it.

Congrats on the crochet! It comes in handy even in knitting....now you can add edges and such on stuff and make it look more polished....

As for hooks, I use a combination of metals, plastics, woods, and an antique pair of whale bones that were my great-grandmother's. The yarn dictates the needle, so that is slips/slides/glides on the hook easier.

Can't wait to see the new projects!

I love it! I've been crocheting since I was 6 -- it's fast and a little different for a bit of spice in yarn use!

BTW, I knit like Anita, with the free yarn in my left hand too!!

They are lovely! You did a fabulous job. I've tried a little crochet edging on things but that's about it. You are giving me hope.
